critical elements for salem/keizer elementary students

Grade 1 

Hop
·        Foot of nonsupport leg is bent and carried in back of body
·        Nonsupport leg swings in pendulum fashion to produce force.
·        Arms bent at elbows and swing forward on take off.
·        Able to hop on the right and left foot.

Starting
·        Begins movement in response to signal.
·        Pushes off with the ball of the foot
·        Uses arms to gain momentum.

Stopping 
·        Bends knees to slow momentum and gain balance.
·        Responds in appropriate time frame to signal
·        Lowers center of gravity by bending at hips.

Grade 2 

Running 
·        Brief period where both feet are off the ground.
·        Arms in opposition to legs and elbows bent.
·        Push off with balls of feet.
·        Nonsupport leg bent approximately 90 degrees.

Gallop 
·        Step and draw the back foot to the front foot.
·        Brief period where both feet are off the ground
·        Shoulders squared to the front.
·        Able to lead with the right and left foot.

Slide
·        Body turned sideways to desired direction of travel
·        A step sideways followed by a slide of the trailing foot to a point next to the lead foot.
·        A short period where both feet are off the ground.
·        Able to slide to the right and the left side.

Asymetrical and Symmetrical Balances on various body parts.
·        Able to hold a symmetrical balance for three seconds.
·        Able to hold an asymmetrical balance for three seconds.

GRADE 3 

Horizontal Jump
·        Swing arms back, then forcefully forward and upward above head.
·        Bend knees before jump and upon landing
·        Take off and land on both feet simultaneously.
·        Arms are brought downward on landing

Leap
·        Take off on one foot and land on the opposite foot.
·        A period where both feet are off the ground (longer than running)
·        Extend back leg (of take off foot) in flight
·        Able to leap with both right and left foot leading.

Skip
·        A rhythmical repetition of the step hop on alternate feet.
·        Arms alternately moving in opposition to legs at about waist level.

Overhand Throw
·        Side opposite throwing arm faces target
·        Throwing arm elbow reaches down and back (like pulling a bow)
·        Simultaneously transfer weight from back to front with step of opposite foot as ball is thrown.
·        Point to target on release- using proper force and follow through.

Catch
·        Ready position (on balls of feet, knees bent, elbows bent, hands open)
·        Track the ball and move to adjust body and hands.
·        Reach toward and give with the ball on the catch.
·        Eyes on the ball-look at throwing partner as they throw.

Kick
·        The trunk is inclined backward during ball contact
·        Plants non kicking foot beside ball.
·        Rapid continuous approach to the ball.
·        Forward swing of the arm opposite kicking leg.
         Eyes on the target

Strike / Two hand strike 
·        Dominate hand grips bat above non dominant hand
·        Non dominant side of body faces the hitting area. (feet parallel)
·        Hip and spine rotation
·        Weight is transferred by stepping with the foot closest to the tosser.
·        Eyes on the target.

Identify changes in his/her body during moderate to vigorous exercise.
·        Increase in heart rate from slower to faster(hand over heart)
·        Increase in body temperature
·        Increase in rate of breathing
·        Thirst

Identify positive ways to resolve conflict. (Self Management) 
·        Walk away
·        Ignore
·        Identity a problem solving strategy (i.e. Rock, Paper, Scissors)

Identify rules, procedures, and etiquette in a specified physical activity. (Self management)
·        Safe play
·        Cooperation with others
·        Sportsmanship  

GRADE 4 

Individual Hand Dribble
·        Contact ball with one hand at about hip height
·        Pushes ball with fingers (not a slap)
·        Ball contacts floor in front of (or to the outside of) foot on the side of the hand being used.
·        Looks up when moving with the ball
         Individual Foot Dribble 
·        Close control, pushing firmly
·        Can change pace
·        Can change direction
·         Looks up when moving with the ball

Dance/Rhythmic Activity
·        Can follow pattern of activity (dance)
·        Moves to beat of music
·        Can move in pattern with others (dance).


Through feedback and practice, demonstrate improvement in performance of a new motor skill.
·        Increase in proficiency of a new skill. ( i.e. learns how to perform a new skill like a jump rope skill or juggling)

     

GRADE 5 

Forehand Strike with a partner
·        Eyes on the ball / object
·        Opposite foot in front
·        Returns ball/object to an area inside a court

Throws with a partner
·        Adjusts speed and force to get object to partner
·        Downward arc of the throwing arm initiates the windup

Catching with a partner
·        Adjusts hands (thumbs up/thumbs down) to area of body to make catch
·        Adjusts body position to line up with the throw
·        Gives with throw appropriate amount based on distance, speed and force of the throw.

Volley with a partner 
·        Eyes on the ball/object
·        Moves to the ball/object
·        Pushes the ball/object with appropriate force using the hands.
·        Follows through in direction of the target.

Use basic offensive and defensive roles in physical activities or games or sports.
·        Offensive role is to attempt to score.
·        Uses offensive strategies such as getting open for pass, faking the defense or changing direction.
·        Demonstrates ability to track or mark opponent or object. (e.g. player to player defense)
·        Positions body between the ball and the goal.

Identify and assess the health-related components of fitness.
·        Complete the fitnessgram physical fitness test.
·        Identify the following components:
·        Muscular Strength
·        Flexibility
·        Cardiovascular Endurance
·        Body Composition
·        Muscular Endurance

Explain and demonstrate safety, rules, procedures and etiquette to be followed during participation in physical activities.
·        Works cooperatively with others (cooperation)
